Painted Bunting

Painted Bunting-SThe male Painted Bunting is the most brightly colored bird in the United States. It’s as if God created it with the leftover colors from all the other birds; a little blue, a little red, a little yellow, a little green. Females are primarily bright green and are one of the only truly green birds in the US.

Range

South central and southeastern coastal United States.

Habitat

Brushy areas and thickets.

Food

Seeds and insects.

Fun Facts

Eyes small Males are highly territorial and may even fight to the death over a prime spot.
Eyes small Not so fun fact: populations are declining significantly due to habitat loss and the pet trade industry. Though illegal, thousands of brightly colored males are trapped in Mexico each year and sold to European caged-bird dealers.
